A useful substrate brief connects material data with thickness, flatness and the next manufacturing step.
Key Inquiry Requirements
Define what the substrate must become
Specify whether you need a bare ceramic blank or a substrate intended for a later assembly or processing step. Include the outline, thickness, holes and edge details that are required at the delivery stage. Make the supply boundary explicit so a bare substrate is not confused with a finished circuit component.
If metallization, bonding or another downstream operation is involved, describe it as a project requirement. Do not assume that a photograph of a ceramic plate includes a metal layer, circuit pattern or finished interconnect. Each additional operation needs its own defined scope and approval basis.
Use grade-specific material data
Aluminum nitride is considered in electronic substrate applications where thermal and electrical requirements must be addressed together. The material name alone does not specify a conductivity value, dielectric requirement or finished-part performance. Include the material designation and the relevant operating conditions in the inquiry.
When a property is essential to the design, identify its required value, test conditions and acceptable supporting document. A typical catalogue value is not necessarily an acceptance limit. Confirm which data belongs to the proposed grade instead of borrowing values from a different supplier or formulation.
Connect thickness and flatness to assembly
State nominal thickness and its tolerance separately from overall flatness and surface finish. Describe how the substrate will be located or supported in the assembly. Where a mounting face or bond interface matters, identify that face on the drawing.
For panels with holes, notches or multiple openings, dimension the features from agreed datums. If a panel will later be divided into smaller parts, explain which geometry is required as supplied and which geometry will be created downstream. This helps avoid comparing quotations for different delivery states.
Explain the surface and handling requirements
Surface texture, cleanliness and packaging requirements should be described in relation to the next process. Ask for the applicable preparation and handling guidance for the proposed substrate. Do not infer cleanliness, polish or processing compatibility from the light color of a product image.
If your assembly process uses a specific preparation step, provide the requirement early. Avoid making an undocumented preparation method part of incoming inspection. The quotation discussion should establish what is included and which downstream steps remain outside the supplied scope.
Prepare the acceptance and purchasing brief
Include the drawing revision, grade requirement, requested quantity and any material or dimensional reports you need. Identify whether the order is for initial evaluation or repeat procurement. Requested dates should be stated clearly, while confirmed delivery and commercial terms remain part of the quotation.
Define how the substrate will be accepted before ordering. If your internal approval depends on an assembly trial, distinguish that qualification activity from the supplier’s dimensional or material documentation. A sample image and a general description cannot replace an agreed specification for the delivered part.
Questions Before You Inquire
Does the product include metallization?
This inquiry page concerns ceramic substrates. Specify any metallization or additional processing separately; inclusion must be confirmed in the proposed scope.
Is a fixed thermal conductivity guaranteed?
No generic numerical guarantee is stated here. Request the proposed grade’s data and agree any acceptance requirement for your project.
Can I specify holes and an outline?
Yes. Send the drawing with feature locations, thickness, datums and edge requirements. Feasibility and delivery form need confirmation.
What information helps compare quotations?
Use the same grade, drawing revision, delivery state, quantity, required reports and packaging basis for each quotation.
