Boron Nitride Ceramic Discs

Boron nitride ceramic discs are drawing-led insulating components for fixtures, thermal assemblies and process interfaces where disc geometry, surface behavior and environment must be reviewed together. Porcecore can help structure an RFQ around the intended contact, loading, temperature, atmosphere and inspection needs.

Disc function and application

A boron nitride disc can occupy several different roles, including an electrical separator, spacer, support, shield or process-contact surface. Those roles impose different requirements on flatness, edge integrity, surface finish, friction, contamination and load transfer. Begin the RFQ with the disc’s function, mating parts and contact pattern, rather than assuming all circular ceramic pieces can be compared by diameter alone.

Describe whether the disc is stationary, clamped, sliding, rotated, heated, cooled or exposed to a material being processed. Identify the load path and whether the disc must maintain a gap, isolate a conductor or prevent sticking. This context helps separate the properties that matter to your application from general material descriptions that may not predict assembly or process behavior.

Geometry and mounting definition

The drawing should establish finished diameter, thickness, roundness or runout, flatness, edge break, chamfer and any central hole, slot, recess or pattern. Locate features from controlled datums and identify the faces used for mounting or contact. If the disc is nested in a pocket or clamped between parts, show the mating geometry, clearance and retention method.

Consider thermal expansion, assembly movement and handling when choosing fit and edge details. A tight fit, floating fit, bonded interface or spring-loaded arrangement may each require different dimensional assumptions. Mark the critical surfaces and specify whether the disc must be supplied as a single piece, a matched set or an orientation-controlled part. Ask for manufacturability feedback before freezing delicate features.

Material and service environment

Define boron nitride as the material family and request data for the grade proposed for the design. Depending on the use, review electrical insulation, thermal behavior, chemical compatibility, mechanical loading, surface interaction and machinability. Require test methods and conditions with reported values, especially when comparing grades or considering a change in process route.

State the atmosphere, pressure, temperature cycle, contact materials, cleaning agents and exposure duration. Explain whether the disc will face vapor deposition, molten material, powder, plasma, vacuum, moisture or reactive chemistry. Do not convert broad statements such as nonstick, high-temperature or corrosion-resistant into guaranteed outcomes; require an application review tied to the actual geometry and environment.

Surface, edges and inspection

Surface requirements should distinguish functional faces from noncontact faces. Describe acceptable roughness or texture only where it affects seating, electrical clearance, release, contamination or heat transfer, and define the measurement method if needed. Edge treatment deserves equal attention: chips or local damage around a hole, rim or chamfer can affect mounting, insulation distance and particle generation.

Inspection criteria may include diameter, thickness, flatness, feature position, hole size, visual condition and surface cleanliness. Set the datums, sampling approach and report format in the RFQ. If the disc will be handled in a clean process, include packaging, protective separators and identification requirements. Visual appearance by itself should not substitute for measurements linked to the disc’s function.

RFQ checklist and technical comparison

Provide the controlled drawing, revision, application description, quantity context, mating-part information, environment and required documentation. Include a sketch of the assembly load path or contact zones when the drawing does not explain the function. State whether prototypes, first-article inspection, material data or application testing are expected before routine purchasing decisions.

When comparing offers, review grade definition, geometry assumptions, edge capability, surface controls, inspection evidence, packaging and change notification. Ask suppliers to identify any unverified property, proposed substitution or process limitation. A sound approval decision connects the disc’s material and shape to the intended assembly, then records the acceptance criteria used for future lots or design revisions.

Product images are illustrative references. They do not establish Porcecore factory ownership, stock availability or the specification of a supplied part. Confirm the drawing, material and order requirements separately.

Questions Before You Inquire

What applications should be explained for a boron nitride disc?

State whether the disc is an insulator, spacer, support, setter, shield or process-contact component. Describe contact materials, load path, movement, atmosphere, temperature cycle and cleaning. Function determines which properties and inspections matter, so a clear application description is more useful than relying on the disc diameter and material name alone.

Which disc features should appear on the drawing?

Show diameter, thickness, flatness, roundness or runout, edge treatment and every hole, recess, slot or pattern. Locate features from controlled datums and identify functional faces. Include mating-pocket, clamp, bond or clearance details where applicable. Mark critical surfaces separately from handling or nonfunctional areas.

How can surface requirements be made practical?

Tie surface criteria to a function such as seating, release, cleanliness, insulation distance or heat transfer. Specify the measurement method when a numeric requirement is necessary, and separate contact faces from other areas. Also define acceptable chips, cracks, marks and contamination so visual inspection has an agreed basis.

What environmental information is needed for review?

Include atmosphere, pressure, temperature cycle, exposure duration, chemicals, contact materials, cleaning agents and mechanical loading. Mention vacuum, powder, molten or reactive process conditions where relevant. Request grade data with test context and ask the supplier to identify assumptions; generic material descriptions cannot establish suitability for every disc application.
